New power for smart vehicles

The 2018 World Autonomous Vehicle Ecosystem Conference was recently held in Jiading District’s Anting Town.

The event, themed “New Integration; New Power,” showcased the latest developments while promoting exchanges of information.

China’s Deputy Minister of Industry and Information Technology Wang Jiangping and Shanghai’s Vice Mayor Zhou Bo gave speeches at the event.

Attendees heard that the second phase of road open for testing intelligent connected automobiles now cover 31.6 kilometers in Shanghai, with 5.5 in Jiading and the rest in the Lingang area of the Pudong New Area.

Shanghai now has 37.2 kilometers of road in total for testing automatic driving technology. The section in Jiading will focus on passenger cars while Lingang looks at commercial use.

Several projects have been signed with the Jiading district government and the Lingang development administration, including Momenta, Roadstar AI and SenseTime — each estimated to be worth more than US$1 billion.

A testing identification system for the Yangtze River Delta area has been launched to raise the region’s industrial ecosystem and infrastructure construction, and to establish standards and norms in the industry.

Wang indicated that China highly stressed the development of intelligent connected automobiles and saw it as a solution to safety, trafficking, energy consumption and pollution issues.

The process will also boost the upgrading of auto technology, Wang said. Next, work would be done on driving innovation.

Shanghai will play its role in promoting exchanges and cooperation with international corporations so as to pool innovation resources and power for ICV growth, Shanghai Vice Mayor Zhou commented.

According to its district government, Jiading is stepping up efforts to extend the industrial chain and optimize value for a sound automobile industry ecosystem, expecting to attract more investors to the district and explore the vast potential of intelligent connected vehicles in response to Shanghai’s goal of establishing four brands of service, manufacturing, shopping and culture.
