New road-building technology reduces costs, saves the environment

REDUCING large rocks into pebbles without a hammer, making crannied roads smooth just like applying cream on one's face … these may sound like magic, but they are not.

A series of new technologies have been adopted by Jiading District since the beginning of this year, which also helpedsave the money and protectthe environment.

For example, a resonance machine helps reduce both noise and energy consumption during road renovations.

In the overhaul of Baoqian Road from concrete to asphalt recently, the construction vehicle with resonance machine turned the potholed concrete road surface into small stones of even sizes, and after a simple treatment, constructors put asphalt directly on the surface.

In previous renovation projects, workers had to remove all the concrete, clean the road and then lay the bottom layer of road - a noisy process which costs enormous labor and funds. With the new technique, the small concrete stones can be reused and the load capacity of road can be raised. At the same time, the construction period is reduced by at least two thirds. Such a machine can break concrete roads of 2,500-3,000 square meters daily, and the project, which takes 150 days using traditional techniques, only needs 40 days now.

Cracks appear on roads after being in use for a period of time, and traditionally these imperfections were only repaired when the whole road was renovated. But workers adopted new sealing technology in the daily maintenance of Chengliu Road to prevent cracks from expanding. With the practice, the cost is significantly reduced and the road can be put back into operation only hours after work has been completed.

In addition, some other new materials are also used in the road maintenance, such as rubber asphalt in the renovation of Liuxiang Road. It can endure high temperatures, resist aging and raise comfort for the drivers.
