New sports center in running for building award
JIADING Sports Center was recently nominated for the Jingang Award, the highest award for metal construction structures in Shanghai. But just a few months ago, Kong Lingbing, vice manager of the project, was uncertain whether the structure could be successfully installed.
“I was astonished when I first saw the blueprint, because I had never seen a roof use such a structure like cable-stayed bridges, although it was widely used in the world,” Kong said, “We eventually decided to use hydraulic pushing technology after more than 10 days’ discussion with experts from Tongji University.”
After two months, 13 cross girders were successfully installed in the center with the support of 8 cables.
Kong said this design not only looks much better than those densely spread net-shaped iron beams, but can also introduce better day lighting to save on power costs.
Some special design features have also been incorporated to ensure audience safety and comfort. For example, the sports center is equipped with an intelligent fire escape system, which can form an escape plan automatically and guide the audience to evacuate rapidly through arrows shown on the roof and walls.
To provide cool air quickly, the outlets of the air-conditioners are installed under the seats. A solar system, rainwater collection system and vertical planting are also integrated into the design.
At present, interior decoration is underway and the center will be put into use in the first half of next year, according to local authorities.
