Old brands live on in modern Jiading stores
AFTER living in high-rise buildings for years, people crave to get closer to the land. In Nanxiang, there is an old street in which ladies' high heels may occasionally get stuck in the cobblestones, and the flags of the stores fluttering in the breeze seem to whisper the past.
The most dazzling stores in a walk along Nanxiang Old Street are those of the time-honored brands. These are Luchunyuan, Tongchunxin, Jimei, Dachangcheng and Suxishun - and they evoke an ancient charm just by reading their names.
But today, do these old shops still keep their original look? Are they still selling the original products? Let's pay a visit.
Luchunyuan Teahouse was founded by Lu Fusheng in Nanxiang in 1928. In January 2002, his son Lu Jianyong built a new house at 23 People's Street and reopened it in the name of Luchunyuan, serving food, wine, tea and so on.
Every chair in Luchunyuan is made of heavy solid wood, same as the stairs. More importantly, sitting in the window seat on the second floor, looking west, you can get a panoramic view of Nanxiang Old Street.
Nanxiang xiaolong (steamed buns) are famous both at home and abroad. In addition to the Guyi Garden Restaurant in front of the Guyi Garden, the steamed buns in Nanxiang Restaurant are also very famous. Nanxiang Restaurant was knocked down in 2002, but was rebuilt at 32 People's Street during the renovation in 2008.
It's quite a good choice to take a break on the old Chinese square table and long bench and try some hot steamed buns after visiting the Old Street. Other time-honored brands like Jimei House also serve steamed buns.
Guangdetang was once a traditional Chinese medicine store with a good reputation. After the street renovation, Guangdetang has specialized in selling ginseng and pilose antler from northeastern China at 33 People's Street.
The proprietor Xing Meili used to work in a local pharmaceutical factory and is familiar with ginseng and pilose antler. When I walked into the store, Xing was patiently explaining the medicinal benefits to a customer.
Dachangcheng was established in the 4th year of Tongzhi (1865) in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). With a history of 140 years, it is the "eldest brother" among the century-old shops in Nanxiang. It is located at 32 People's Street, selling groceries.
Although Nanxiang Old Street is only several hundred meters long, it carries on the century-old memories of Nanxiang people and their prospects for a bright future.
