Opera performances a hit in local living rooms

MORE and more local residents in Jiading District are joining cultural activities, and many talented people are emerging.
Li Yongshun from Yulan Community of Malu Town and 20 other opera lovers are busy rehearsing to stage 37 opera performances for the residents in the countryside. Li used to be a math teacher before retirement. Now he is busy writing dramas related to the lives of local people in the forms of Yuejue Opera or Shanghai Opera.
In recent years, a group of talented individuals have created a lot of cultural works, and local residents have also been encouraged to perform on the stage. There were altogether 43 programs developed by residents in 2011, including operas, dances, poem recitals, singing, music instruments and storytelling, mostly were created by retired people and young teachers.
Tan Qian from Anhui Province, together with a dozen of dance lovers, joined Jiangqiao Qunxing Art Group two years ago. Jiangqiao Town authorities invited community art teachers to give them professional training, bought audio and video materials for them and provided them with original playbooks. Soon the dance group won several awards in the contests of municipal and district level. They were even invited to the World Expo Shanghai to make their dance performance "Mother and Daughter."
There are a lot of "new Jiading residents" from other parts of China in Jiangqiao. And they are another source of art talents for the performances. In a recent art contest, Fang Kele from Fujian Province amazed audiences with lion dancing, while Guo Zizhao from Henan Province surprised the local residents with the Italian opera "Nessun Dorma."
Performances in residents' sitting rooms have been immensely popular among local residents, as they can chat and feel most relaxed in this environment.
