Organic vegetables offer better nutrition and taste
VEGETABLE growing in China heavily relies on chemical fertilizers and pesticides to get good harvests.
But an increasing number of people are beginning to question whether foods produced with chemicals retain their good taste and whether they pose health risks.
I decided to look into the matter further by checking out places selling organically grown, chemical-free fruits and vegetables.
Living in the Huating area gave me an easy access to agricultural cooperatives that specialize in chemical-free foods: Shanghai Xiaxiyang Organic Fruits & Vegetables Garden and Shanghai Dongzhou Fengyuan Organic Fruits & Vegetables Cooperative.
Both won commendation at the World Expo 2010 Shanghai, which stressed going green as one of its themes.
Organic vegetables come in an array of more than 60 categories, including leafy greens, eggplant, garlic, soybeans, Chinese wax gourds and grapes. So there was no worry about a monotonous menu for my family if we go organic.
Members of the cooperatives were helpful in explaining all the details of organic farming. I learned, for example, that organic vegetables have a longer growing season than their chemically grown counterparts. Because of that, organic vegetables usually contain higher levels of vitamins, calcium, magnesium, iron, chromium and other basic minerals critical for health.
Organic vegetables also brim with anti-cancer and anti-oxidant agents, and they taste fresher than non-organic vegetables.
With all the emphasis nowadays on low-carbon, green living, organic vegetables are enjoying a surge in popularity. They are a natural alternative to pesticides, hormones and other additives used in foods today, and they don't do damage to the soil they grow in.
What a splendid way to join the campaign for a more harmonious global environment and a more balanced ecosystem.
When it comes to gift-giving at the end of the year, I can't think of a better way to honor friends and relatives than presenting them with health-nourishing organic fruits and vegetables. It's a gift of life and a celebration of the harmony of nature and man.
