Outsourcing driving development

A well-developed environment for science and research as well as a great pool of talent has helped Jiading attract more investment and supported the sustainable development of industries in recent years.
Out of 93 platforms in universities and research institutes in the district, 48 have provided outsourcing services to companies.
The biggest benefit to companies is the savings to be made in research and development through cooperation with an outsourcing platform.
Shanghai Industrial Technology Research Institute is one such platform and an increasing number of companies are seeking cooperation with it.
Identifying problems
A worker at the institute described work for a client that involved etching a layer of silicon dioxide on a tiny chip and using an electronic microscope to help identify problems.
With the equipment used in the process valued at 5 million yuan (US$798,000), not including maintenance costs, the company would have faced a huge bill for such equipment and maintenance fees plus recruiting specialists to initiate research and development projects if the institute didn鈥檛 offer outsourcing services, said Zhu Jiaqi, its deputy sales director.
Another two technology start-up companies showed great interest in a newly established research line based on 鈥淢ore than Moore鈥 technology.
Their partnerships with the institute are expected to quicken the pace of development for both companies and improve their efficiency.
Jiading is always hungry for innovation due to its large number of companies and they are teaming up with universities and research institutes to enable a more cost-effective win-win approach.
Shanghai Power Equipment of Laser Co Ltd in Jiading Industrial Zone is one beneficiary of the initiative.
With the support from the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, the company managed to manufacture a system which can eliminate PM2.5 particles in the atmosphere by using a magnetic field generated by high-frequency laser power.
