Pagodas offer chance to be happy
THERE is one famous custom passing down from generation to generation in China. People enjoy climbing a mountain, a pagoda or tower to look out at the surrounding view to welcome the New Year. People believe by being closer to the sky they will find happiness easier. There are many old pagodas in Jiading District, and many people visit them during Chinese New Year. Most pagodas in Jiading date back almost 1,000 years and they all play a role in blessing the surrounding residents.
Fahua Pagoda, also known as Golden Sand Tower, at No. 349 Nandajie Street in Jiading District was first established in 1205-1207, the Kaixi Period of the Song Dynasty (960-1279).
The Fahua Pagoda is a seven-story tower made of bricks and wood. The wooden ladders between each floor can help you climb to the top, which provides a nice view of Jiading Old City. On the ground floor, there hangs a plaque written by Lou Jian, one of Jiading's famous artists from the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
In 1608, Chen Yiyuan, then governor of Jiading County, had the pagoda repaired and several emperors in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1919) such as Emperor Kangxi, Emperor Yongzheng, Emperor Qianlong and Emperor Jiaqing also ordered repairs of Fahua Pagoda.
At present, Fahua Pagoda is a landmark in Jiading. Along with the river and ancient old lanes, Fahua Pagoda is one of the most beautiful places on Zhouqiao Old Street.
Nanxiang Double Tower, also known as Five Dynasties Double Tower, is on the north bank of Xianghua Bridge, Nanxiang Town.
Some historians believe that the tower was built during the Five Dynasties (AD 907-979). This makes it the oldest building in Jiading, and possibly the oldest in Shanghai. After several renovations, Nanxiang Double Tower appears quite elegant with an architecture style from the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907).
It is 11 meters high and the diameter on the bottom is 186 centimeters.
