Pagodas, parks and other pastimes

A visit to Zhouqiao in Jiading is a must for tourists. Zhouqiao with a history of around 800 years, is considered the main birthplace of Jiading history and culture.

There are various historical attractions around Zhouqiao, such as pagodas, old bridges, temples and other attractions that were built during the Song (960-1279), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming (1368-1644) and Qing dynasties (1644-1911).

It is worth spending a day in Zhouqiao to appreciate the local sights which include Huilongtan Park, Confucius Temple, Fahua Pagoda and Qiuxiapu Garden.

People can also visit the bamboo carving museum and Lu Yanshao Art Gallery. Besides, the local delicacies are available in two ancient streets by the riverside.



The Confucius Temple is home to the only Imperial Examination Museum in China.

The temple was originally built in 1219, and during its 800-year history it has undergone 10 major renovations so it is quite well conserved.

The museum boasts more than 1,000 pieces of exhibits relating to the Chinese imperial examination system.

From the Confucius temple, a short walk across Binxing Bridge is Huilongtan Park. Dredged in 1588, it is the confluence of five rivers.

The park surrounds a pond and consists of two parts. Yingkui Hill and Huilongtan Pond are in the south, while in the north are Yi'an Hall built in 1885, Zuihua Hall built in 1886 and Wanfo Pagoda built in the 13th century.

Only a five-minute walk along the Nandajie Street is the Jiading Bamboo Carving Museum.

The art has more than 400 years' history in Jiading and is known for incorporating Chinese poetry, calligraphy, painting, printing and sculpture. Jiading bamboo carving was listed as a national Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006.

The museum displays bamboo carving works and explains its history to tourists, as well as assisting in the research of the culture.

After the museum, a visit to the Fahua Pagoda is recommended. From the top of the pagoda, which is more than 40 meters high, the entire view of Jiading Old Town can be appreciated.

Fahua Pagoda, also known as Gold Sand Pagoda, was first built between 1205 to 1207. It is a square, brick-wood seven-story structure accessible by ladders. A local tradition of climbing the pagoda is supposed to bring good luck to students.

After walking around many of the sights, people can enjoy a rest at Zhouqiao Food Street, where a wide range of Chinese delicacies can be found including the famous local specialty Nanxiang xiaolong (little steamed buns).

The area is also home to the Lu Yanshao Art Gallery that was originally opened in 1999 on the 90th birthday anniversary of the acclaimed Chinese landscape painter. The gallery holds 75 pieces of artworks by the master Lu.

How to get there:

Drive from downtown Shanghai to S5 Hujia Expressway, exit at Jiading Town about half an hour later, then carry on along Bole Road to Zhouqiao Old Street only within a few minutes.
