Passengers rush to try new Metro
Passengers rushed to try out the new Metro Line 11 on January 1, the second day of its opening, with 50,000 people joining the trip between Shanghai downtown and Jiading District.
Average daily passenger flow on the line is 25,000 and doubles at weekends.
The launch of Metro Line 11 has made it easier for city dwellers to make a day trip to the outskirts.
According to statistics from the district's tourism department, scenic spots in Jiading attracted 11,778 visitors during the first three days of the year, an increase of 91.64 percent compared with the previous year.
It led to ticket revenue of 112,300 yuan (US$16,450), an increase of 121.7 percent compared with that of last year.
Starting from Jiading North station, Metro Line 11 includes Jiading West station, Baiyin Road station, Jiading New City station, Malu station and Nanxiang station.
It provides easy transport for Jiading Industrial Park, Jiading Auto Industry Park, Malu Grape Park and Nanxiang ancient town.
Around these five stations, the local government will develop homes, offices and enterprises to boost the economic development of the whole area.
Among them, Jiading New City, which includes Malu Town, Anting Town and Jiading Industrial Park, is one of the three main new "cities" in Shanghai's overall urban planning. It will become Jiading's center of politics, economy and culture in the future.
The distance between Malu and Nanxiang stations is the longest in this project, and the train reaches its highest speed of 100 kilometers an hour here. Passengers say that acceleration is smooth and there is no jolting.
To protect passengers from chill winter winds and summer heat, all elevated stations from Jiading North to Nanxiang have set up waiting rooms of about 10 square meters. The waiting rooms are equipped with chairs, televisions and air-conditioners.
Also, each train carriage on the line is equipped with an area to carry people in wheelchairs and baby buggies.
Passengers can transfer to Metro Line 2 at Jiangsu Road and to Metro Line 3 and 4 at Caoyang Road. Usually, it takes three to four minutes to make the transfer to another line.
