Patients find Zhang’s a wizard with needles

DR Zhang Dezhong’s clinic is just 10 square meters and only has four beds, but it receives up to 50 patients a day.

The clinic is at Anting Town Community Health Service Center and by the center there are two neighborhoods whose residents have been relocated from their farmhouses.

When they feel the need, they go to see Dr Zhang for acupuncture or cupping therapy.

A senior citizen surnamed Liu had suffered from osteoarthritis in her knees for a long time. Encouraged by her family, Liu went to Dr Zhang for acupuncture.

After just two courses of treatments, her symptoms improved. “The little needle is like a divine needle,” Liu said.

A patient from downtown Shanghai suffered an injury to his waist and after treatment at another hospital he still felt some discomfort. His friend advised him to seek Zhang’s help. After just one visit, his condition greatly improved.

Zhang, 52, has more than 30 years of traditional Chinese medicine experience.

He entered the then Fangtai Health Center in Jiading when he was 18 to learn acupuncture from his TCM mentor Dai Shouping. Zhang watched closely as Dai worked on patients. After learning all the acupuncture points by heart, Zhang started to practice on his own body.

Three years later he was sent to a medical school to receive systematic education and after graduation he became a doctor at the health center.

Zhang never stopped learning. Hearing that there was a TCM doctor named Cai Deheng in Shanghai’s suburban Baoshan District, who was renowned for curing paralysis brought on by strokes or other illnesses, Zhang went to learn from him.

Eventually his hard study was rewarded.

When a patient from Taicang in Shanghai’s neighboring Jiangsu Province suffered brain injuries in a traffic accident and couldn’t move half of his body, Zhang treated him with three months of acupuncture and cupping.

After treatment, the patient was able to make the trip to Zhang’s clinic on his own. The techniques Zhang used were the ones he had learned from Dr Cai.

Zhang has been named a city-level outstanding medical worker in Shanghai, the only community health center doctor to receive this honor in Jiading.
