Patriot's dreams realized
JIADING native and vice chairman of China's National People's Congress, Hu Juewen (1895-1989), sat on the rostrum of the fourth, fifth and sixth meetings of the country's highest legislative body, his long beard flowing over his chest.
He maintained the beard for two reasons: to keep in mind the country's enemies and to support achievement of the four modernizations - agriculture, industry, science and technology, and military.
In misery-ridden old China, just like many other people with lofty ideals, Hu worked to develop a wealthy and powerful path for the country. After graduating from college he became an apprentice at Hanyang Iron Works.
At age 26 he established Newman Machine Factory and later set up a cooperative metal factory, the Great Wall brickworks and other enterprises.
Japan's invasion broke his dream of saving the country with industry. To avoid ruin, he organized businessmen to move their private factories from Shanghai to Chongqing. During a critical stage of the anti-Japanese aggression war, he united business circles and created the China Democratic National Construction Association with Huang Yanpei.
After the founding of New China, Hu saw new hope for the development of industry. In 1956, he was further encouraged by a visit to northwest China, including Lanzhou, Xi'an and some other places.
Hu was most excited by the effect of policies instituted in the 10 years after reform and opening-up. The modernization showed him a brilliant future for China, and gave him confidence.
"National independence and reunification of the motherland and realization of the four modernizations to eliminate poverty are the biggest hopes which I have long cherished since the days of my youth. I am 89 years old now, but I have an ambition to live to 106. I want to see with my own eyes the realization of the grand goal of quadrupling, and the more dazzling socialist China," he said.
Although his personal ambition was not realized, his long-cherished wish, thanks to the efforts of people across the country, has been achieved ahead of schedule. The people have become well-off and strive toward higher levels of a comfortable society.
