Perfect springtime pursuits
WITH spring here, it's the perfect time for a trip, and Jiading offers a range of destinations to enjoy the springtime.
Picking strawberries
Strawberries from Dengta Village in Jiading Industrial Zone are pretty famous in the local area, as they're big, sweet and free of chemical pesticides. Visitors are welcome to come and pick these strawberries.
You can also buy strawberry bonsai for 10 yuan (US$1.53) per pot and if you want to taste more than strawberries, some local restaurants offer rural farm food.
How to get there: Drive north along Chengbei Road and turn left onto Shuangzhu Road. Head west until you enter Dengta Village. Usually it takes about 25 minutes to drive there from Jiading Town, but be careful because of narrow roads in the village. Alternatively, going by bicycle is a good option.Cost: about 40 yuan per kilogram of strawberriesTel: 158-2171-4955, Fei Xueying
Martial arts
Historic relics of Chinese martial arts can be found in Jiading Imperial Martial Arts Examination Museum, which is located in Jiading Martial Arts School. It's open throughout the year for free, and visitors can see traditional martial arts weapons, read "secret books of martial arts" and learn the history of the ancient imperial martial arts examination.
If the exhibition inspires you to take up martial arts, Jiading Martial Arts School has training classes during the summer vacation, teaching amateurs the basic skills.

Ancient constructions
The Street of Ming and Qing Dynasties will be opened to the public around May 1. It is on the west of Bole Square in Jiading District, where 12 residential buildings from the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) periods are displayed. The historic buildings include common residential houses relocated from Jiading's rural villages and some are even from Anhui, Jiangxi and Shanxi provinces. Among them, a three-story Huizhou residence attracts many visitors as it displays Huizhou-style features such as high walls, small windows and wax gourd-like beams.
Traditional food such as Nanxiang xiaolong (small steamed buns), tea ceremony performances and an ancient coin exhibition will also be found on the street.
Barbecue Restaurant
With great service, Soraksan Korean Barbecue is an eatery pretty popular with the Japanese and Koreans in Jiading District. The food is fresh and reasonably priced, so stomachs can be filled for about 50 yuan per person.
