Pioneering entrepreneur's former home still stands proudly
COVERING an area of 1,300 square meters, Yin family's courtyard house in Loutang Protected Historical Area in the north of Jiading District was built at the beginning of the Republic of China (1911-1949).
With the layout of five standard rooms in width and four courtyards in depth, the two-story brick building has 43 rooms and 14 bungalows with delicate, vivid carvings on the crossbeams, windows and doors.
By the Hengli River there stands a water pavilion overlooking the flowing river. There is also a roof-top garden, which was quite rare at the time it was built.
The owner of this large-scaled house was Yin Youmo (1863--1915), one of the pioneering entrepreneurs in Jiading.
Yin's family was rich and famous in ancient Loutang Town. Yin got involved in business with his father at a young age.
They started with cotton yarn and cotton cloth and they soon became famous entrepreneurs in Shanghai.
He was also on the board of directors at the Shanghai General Chamber of Commerce.
Yin adopted advanced technology and science to boost his business. He studied English and visited Europe and America to learn about new ideas to improve his business.
When he returned to China, he brought back high-quality cotton seeds from America. Planting them in Jiading proved to be successful.
During his trip in Europe and America, he learned that advancements in industry and technology relied on the prosperity of culture.
When he returned to Shanghai, he started to support the Commercial Press in Shanghai.
He helped fund the purchase of advanced equipment, and also recruited talents such as Zhang Yuanji (1867-1959) and Cai Yuanpei (1868-1940).
The Commercial Press later formed its own publishing system in compiling, translation and printing.
Yin died in 1915, but Yin's courtyard house has been carefully preserved and renovated by the Jiading government.
