Q: Can expats purchase railway tickets from railway stations?
A: Expats can buy tickets directly with their valid identification documents or their photocopies at the railway station.
There are 24 types of identification documents that will be accepted but passports are the most convenient.
Q: How can expats buy railway tickets online?
A: Expats can buy railway tickets at the website www.12306.cn. If they do not have an account on the website, they can register with their passport number. After booking railway tickets online, expats can collect them at railway station ticket offices or from a train ticket agency.
Expats can’t use the automatic ticket machines at railway stations since they are designed for Chinese identification cards only.
Compared to buying tickets at railway stations, buying tickets online is more convenient.
However, many expats will have difficulties when they try to input their full names. The railway authorities only allow them 30 characters without a space. They also need to input their family name first, before their first name.
Expats whose full names are longer than 30 characters or have special characters can only buy tickets at railway stations or ticket agency offices.
