Plans for healthy district
JIADING District is taking preventative steps to combat a rise in the incidence of hypertension and diabetes, two major public health problems.
Doctors blame the diseases on smoking, excessive drinking, unhealthy diets, lack of exercise and obesity.
"These two chronic diseases are increasingly common among young people," said Zhang Yiying, a doctor with the Jiading Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
Surveys conducted by the center since 2007 show that 40 percent of local people suffer high blood pressure and 3.9 percent are diabetic. More than 40 percent of adults aged between 35 and 64 are smokers.
The surveys also found that more than 10 percent of people drink excessively. The rate for those aged 45 to 54 is 50 percent.
About one in eight people skip breakfast every day, and four out of five people don't eat at least one piece of fruit daily.
One third of people spend less than 10 hours per week doing exercises, and 30 percent of the respondents were overweight. The obesity rate among students surpasses 15 percent, the surveys found.
Community medical center staff will organize regular follow-up checks on patients suffering high blood pressure and offer guidance on medical treatment, diet and exercise. In 2010, 4,800 patients were registered in the follow-up program.
The district will also launch diabetes checks for high-risk groups, and issue health warnings where necessary.
According to the surveys, about half of Jiading residents aged between 65 and 69 don't correlate smoking with cardiovascular disorders, and 93 percent of people don't do anything to control their weight.
Many people are unaware of the harm that excessive drinking, an unhealthy diet and lack of exercise do to the body, the center said.
That makes Jiading's three-year plan to become a "healthy district" an uphill challenge.
