Platforms improve research and enterprise links

THE Jiading industrial base of National Technology Transfer Center of Chinese Academy Sciences (Shanghai) has been launched in Jiading, introducing three platforms to improve technology transfer between research institutes and enterprises.
The platforms integrate research with investment and policy for emerging industrial clusters.
The first platform caters for the extraction of scientific and technological achievements, their cultivation and assessment, making them applicable for industrialization.
After that a business service platform offers financial and legal advice. In the next step a government fund will provide financial support ahead of the final stage of industrialization.
The three platforms have benefited a number of scientific and technological achievements including a coating product developed by an institute under the Chinese Academy Sciences.
Through technology transfer it has won orders from an energy saving renovation project at the Jinmao Tower.
Some start-ups have also gained support from the platforms.
Dr Li Xiaojun who studied laser technology overseas for many years decided to start his own business in Jiading. Local authorities introduced him to Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics to offer technical support. The laser company that both sides jointly established has achieved 60 million yuan (US$8.7 million) in sales since the first product rolled off the production line.
At present, Jiading Industrial Zone is cooperating with Shanghai Institute of Laser Technology to build an incubator for the industrialization of laser technology.
The laser innovation center provides start-ups not only with working spaces but also technical support which may help some micro businesses in industry to grow.
