Poetic film series mark town’s 800th anniversary
AN animation film featuring traditional Chinese culture to mark the town’s 800th anniversary has become an online sensation.
“Lovesickness” (first episode) is a story inspired by the poem “Lovesickness” by Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD) poet Wang Wei (701-761 AD).
The handmade animation film depicts a love tragedy of a Jiading scholar and his beloved. The scholar Wang Chutong grew up with Liu Niang but could not marry her, who was born into a well-off family — he was deemed not wealthy enough. Liu Niang followed her family’s wishes and wed the son of a millionaire.
This is the second work of the Chinese Choir series animation films to mark the establishment of Jiading.
Film directors Liu Xujian and Peng Qingzheng, together with historian Li Xia’en, began two years ago to create the series of animation films based on ancient poems.
By the end of next year, there will be up to eight works of the series completed, involving popular poems such as “A Traveler’s Song” by Tang poet Meng Jiao (751-814 AD) and “Night Thoughts” by Tang poet Li Shangyin (813-858 AD).
