Police now help pick baby names
JIADING District police have found a way to help parents who are seeking a unique name for their child, which is often difficult in a country of more than 1.3 billion people.
Parents can simply use the Jiading police microblog to check possible names. The service is only open to parents of new born babies and via private messages to ensure privacy.
Wang Xi, 31, tried the new service earlier this month.
He sent a message to the Jiading District Public Security Bureau's microblog, including two names he was considering for his baby.
In the afternoon he received a reply from Jiading police, saying the name Wang Xiaomao is used by 133 people and Wang Damao is used by 21 people in Shanghai.
"The service is incredible," Wang said Chinese can use the combination of two to six characters for a name.
