Profound history of Malu Town comes alive at three impressive museums

DURING the last years of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), as the Yuan army was driving southward, Lu Nanda, the son of the Prime Minister Lu Xiufu, took refuge in Jiading. Gradually a small village was formed in the area, and the residents in the neighborhood named it Malu.

That is because ma in Chinese means the horse and Lu Nanda used to be the head of the royal hussars. People put ma and the surname of Lu together and called this area Malu. From that time on Malu Town has developed a profound history.

If you want to learn more about the culture and folk traditions of Malu in a short time, it's best to visit the Malu Folk Museum, Xu Zhenbao Private Collection Museum and Jiang Yuming Bamboo Carving Museum. The three museums are open to the public every day, and guides are on hand.

? Malu Folk Museum

This museum showcases old photos that capture the food, clothes and lifestyles of Malu people, along with antique furniture and farm tools. The museum has especially showcased the change of Malu over the past three decades akin to a long scroll. Local grandmothers will demonstrate old weaving techniques and visitors can try to do it by themselves.

? Xu Zhenbao Private Collection Museum

Private collector Xu Zhenbao, a retired middle-school teacher, displays all the rare items he has collected over the past several decades, varying from ancient coins to agricultural tools and folk objects. Xu's invaluable collection is categorized according to the different dynasties, and accompanied by meticulous explanations. The 1,000 ancient coins on display are quite rare. Besides coins, Xu's collections of ceramics, silverware, embroidery, wine utensils, locks and old tobacco pipes reflect the folk traditions of Jiading.

? Jiang Yuming and Su Yurong Bamboo Carving Museum Jiang Yuming and Su Yurong is a couple engaged in bamboo carvings. They are both residents of Malu. Their bamboo carving works have garnered a series of national awards. The museum showcases some of the best of their works, all displaying intricate carving techniques.
