Prognosis excellent for new medicine park

Shanghai Precision Medicine Industrial Park is taking shape in Nanxiang Town, Jiading District. By the end of this month, it will gradually open the core area’s Good Manufacturing Practice factory, third-party testing center and cell center.

Precision medicine, which aims to provide individualized medical solutions according to one’s genes, will be able to detect relevant chromosomal disorders before a baby is born or use medicine precisely by finding the gene to target.

It is estimated that the scale of the global precision medicine market should reach US$250 billion in 2018 and even hit US$10 trillion in the next 10 years.

Jiading’s Precision Medicine Industrial Park is an ideal platform for startups and innovation, said Nanxiang Party secretary Yan Jianming. Plenty of great projects can be found on the platform and they can also seize the chance to collaborate with investment institutions, Yan said.

To make the platform more professional, the Jiading government approached Furong Capital, a fintech and innovation platform launched by the research institute of Fudan University in Ningbo, to build the park together.

“The construction of labs in the park is totally different from that of common labs,” said Guo Yaohua, general manager of Shineland, the company responsible for construction.

“Any failure to meet the strict standards on materials or temperature would destroy all the experiment samples, so we have been careful during construction and kept consulting with the professionals at Fudan University,” Guo said.

Even though it is only less than 100 days before the park finally opens, construction has been continuously adapted to meet the highest standards.

“We aim to breed industrial unicorns like Innovent Biologics and strive to become the top Chinese incubator for precision medicine,” said Sun Pengjun, Furong Capital’s president.

All technology should land on industrialization, Sun added, and Fudan has done its part in joining with Jiading to build an ecosystem that covers comprehensive precision medicine technologies and identification services.

Fudan’s clinical medical resources will be of great use in the cooperation.

The 50 million yuan (US$7.9 million) GMP factory will house public labs for all the medical enterprises in the park. Professional medical reports will be provided by a third-party test center.

“We welcome companies to settle in the park,” Sun added, “but only those highly potential ones that pass our examination will be allowed to enter.”
