Pupils make their mark on cloth

"In the world of blue and white, we try to find the most beautiful blue.

"Not the pure blue or pure white, because in the world of blue and white we have deep inspiration and intensive memory.

"We start learning and we feel happy, we make efforts to search the most beautiful blue memory."

These are some of the reactions of students studying wax printing on fabric, known as batik, at Feng Bang Middle School in Jiading District.

The folk art has proved popular for students at the school, leading to a world of discovery and creation.

Cloth colored with vegetable dyes, blue and white prints and batik printing are ancient Chinese folk arts.

According to research, batik originated in the Qin (221BC-206BC) and the Han (206BC-220AD) dynasties.

Minorities living in southwest China used beeswax and paraffin wax as raw material to paint on the white fabric, then put the fabric into a vat with blue dye.

After sufficient time, the batik would be finished and the wax removed.

Batik is now used on various fabrics, which can be used as home decoration.

As a non-material culture treasury, batik is a traditional art with plenty of educational values.

Feng Bang Middle School has established the "Blue Memory Batik Corporation," and has invited Wang Xiaoyin, professor of Shanghai Normal University, to become their batik instructor.

They have also set up a batik classroom and a showroom called "Bala Fang." Some products such as "Marriage of Rats" by the students have won prizes in art competitions.
