Quality of tap water set to be upgraded
JIADING residents will be able to drink better quality water from the deep of the Yangtze River within two years.
The 788-million-yuan (US$118 million) project will build the pipeline connecting to the Chenhang Reservoir. It will start in the first half of next year and the first phase of the project will be completed in 2012. By then, it will greatly improve the quality and quantity of the water coming into Jiading.
Currently, apart from Nanxiang and Zhenxin areas, running water in most Jiading district is from the Shugou Reservoir, which gets the water quite close to the bank of the Yangtze River. While the Chenhang Reservoir can get the water 2 kilometers away from the bank and, at a depth of 7 meters from the surface of the river, which is much clearer than the former. What's more, the current daily demand for water in Jiading is about 500,000 tons, and the Shugou Reservoir can't keep up with the demand.
"There will be no more dirty or salty taste water once the pipeline project is done", said Chen Zhou, vice director of the district's water authority.
As the first phase, the project will supply Jiading with 400,000 tons of water a day. The remaining gap of 100,000 tons will be supplied by the Shugou Reservoir. By 2020, the project will supply 770,000 tons of water.
