RESEARCH and development work is a key to the economic success of businesses in Jiading District.
Shanghai Yingda Air-Conditioning Enterprise Co, for example, is investing almost 5 million yuan (US$735,294) a year in R&D. Some products it has developed were used in the Shanghai World Financial Center and in the Japan Pavilion at World Expo Shanghai.
Zhang Zhichao, head of Yingda's engineering department, said nearly 10 new products were being researched at the same time.
Shanghai Changyuan Electronic Materials Co is one of China's leading manufacturers of heat shrinkable pipes, with a market share around 30 percent. The company operates nine research laboratories.
Last year, after extensive testing, Changyuan produced a heat shrinkage pipe for brake cables that boosts durability and lifespan. The product garnered 4 million yuan in sales in its first six months, and orders remain brisk.
Another enterprise strong in R&D is Shanghai Huace Navigation Technology Co, which hold 25 percent of the domestic market in geodesic and measuring software.
