R&D centers propel business to fresh highs of innovation
JIADING now boasts a total of 115 technology research and development centers, second only to Pudong New Area.
The centers have played positive roles in raising the whole district's industry capacity and realizing sustainable growth.
The average sales volume of the enterprises which own the centers reached more than 200 million yuan (US$29.30 million) in 2009. They mainly deal with industries such as essences and spices, electronic information, electric machinery, food processing, and autos and spare parts.
Among the institutes, one has been designated at state level, 56 at city level, and 58 at district level.
Currently, four to five city-level centers and 10 to 15 district-level facilities emerge each year.
Shanghai Hu Gong Auto-Electric Co Ltd is an enterprise specializing in manufacturing auto electric appliances. Each year, the company spends 3 to 5 percent of its sales on technology research and development and creates more than 50 new products.
Last year, the company's sales reached 280 million yuan, 20 percent over the previous year. Of that, 70 percent was earned by new products and technology.
Last November, the company signed a contract with Shanghai University to jointly work on a battery control system for a new-energy bus. The project is in research and development.
Shanghai Wood-Based Panel Machinery Co Ltd has also seen the advantage of science and technology. Li Shaokun, chief engineer of the company, said it is the only enterprise in China that can produce a wood-based panel machine called ContiPlus.
"Currently, only three enterprises in the world can produce it. It has taken us six years with a total investment of over 200 million yuan to achieve it," Li said. "ContiPlus costs 10 million yuan less than similar overseas products."
