Read all about it ... this library is best
Shanghai Jiading Library topped with a score of 216.5, over 30 points more than the second, in the performance review of Shanghai’s 20 district and town libraries by Shanghai Central Library. The review consisted of 20 key performance indicators, including the number of new library cards and lending rates.
The design of the library’s new branch, on Yumin Road S., combines Chinese traditional characters and modern architecture elements and has proved an attraction in itself.
Some people even travel from Minhang and Qingpu districts at weekends. More than 1.43 million visits were paid to the new building last year while more than 1.64 million books were circulated, with 8 percent more library cards given out.
The concept of one library with two branches makes it easier for readers to borrow and return books. The old branch, on Qinghe Road, still attracts a lot of readers despite the growing popularity of the new one. Jiading Library management raised money to renovate the old branch’s reference reading room and electronic reading room last year. The renovated branch provides a better environment and has Wi-Fi.
Thousands of books added
The library possesses 900,000 books and other print items and adds about 2,000 books to its collection every week.
“The average fund for book purchase is required to be at least 2 yuan (32 US cents) for each permanent resident. Now our purchasing fund has reached 4 yuan on average,” said Jin Yan, the library’s director.
The library has signed agreements with publishers to offer the most up-to-date collection of books and materials in various formats. Readers are encouraged to tell the library what books they couldn’t find in the collection.
The library added 132 books last year alone specifically at the request of readers.
Shanghai Jiading Library has held a series of branding activities to connect with readers and events can increase popularity for certain works. For example, a lecture on Emperor Wudi of Han Dynasty (206 BC-23 AD) last year led to a surge of interest in history books.
Some popular events are usually fully booked within half an hour after they’re announced.
Last month, 130 tickets for a photography lecture were gone even quicker.
