Readers race to the finish line, by the book
ONE hundred readers recently accomplished a reading marathon in Jiading. Each of them spent up to six hours reading a book written by Hong Kong food critic and columnist Chua Lam and one hour answering questions.
No one was out of breath and few calories were burned off after the race began at 10am on October 29 at Jiading Library.
The final scores were decided by players’ reading speed and their accuracy in answering questions.
Shen Chen, founder of the reading marathon campaign, said that it was hoped the innovation would encourage more reading in an era of digital networks.
Xu Xiaoying, an elementary school teacher, said reading was her favorite hobby and she reads dozens of books a year. She also encourages her students to read more books and develop their own reading habits.
During the reading marathon, an automotive engineering designer from Jiading Industrial Zone spent four hours and three minutes carefully reading the book.
Zhu Jie wrote three pages of notes which helped her reach high scores in answering questions. She even drew a family tree of the writer and kept an account of most of the recipes in the book.
“I read the book slowly but gave the right answer to most of the questions,” Zhu said.
Sui Bo, 29, was the last to hand in her paper, after nearly five hours’ reading. Sui, a traffic accident analyst, reads essays and fictions in her spare time and is a frequent visitor to the library.
