Reading club helps keep minds alert and young

THE Sunshine Reading Club in the Xincheng Road Community in Jiading District celebrated its 10th anniversary recently.

The group, which has grown from 100 members to more than 1,000 in the decade, was founded to promote reading and continuing education among residents, especially older people.

Bao Boying, the leader of the club, said members read books, newspapers and other materials to try to keep their minds alert, curious and young.

"We have seniors who come to the meetings accompanied by a nursemaid or on crutches,'' Bao said. "Even people who have moved from the community come back to attend."

Sometimes if people are invalids, club members visit their homes and offer helps such as accompanying them to the hospital.

The club is divided into 19 groups, each with its own focus. It also sponsors group activities such as singing, exercise, debates and discussions.

Club member Sheng Kejian, 78, spends eight hours a day reading news from home and abroad. He has amassed more than 20 books of news clippings he has cut and saved.
