Reaping bigger harvests and higher profits with science

AGRICULTURAL science and technology are helping Jiading farmers grow better crops, reap bigger harvests and bigger incomes.

This year, about 300 farmers will attend classes and training in basic agriculture, modern methods, technology, marketing, financing and brand management. The first classes started this month.

Another example of the district efforts to help farmers is an information service hotline. It has handled more than 5,000 calls and provided on-site help to 200 farmers since it was launched three years ago.

Experts from the hotline service, Agriculture Technology 100, visited farmers at Jiading Industrial Zone on Nanxin Road on March 17.

In the morning alone, they distributed more than 3,000 brochures about better farming and gave out 500 containers of vegetable seeds and pesticides.

Jiading District is providing information and technology to its farmers to boost the level of agriculture.

More than 75,000 text messages have been sent to farmers, advising them on market demand and giving practical tips.

Farmer Gu Yanping plants more than eight hectares of hami melons but last year's harvest was down and he turned to the hotline for help.

Experts said the poor harvest was probably caused by the high density of germs and high salinity of the soil since melons had been grown for too many years.

They suggested planting rice, so as to restore the nutrients in the soil. Gu said he was very satisfied with that solution.

To extend science and technology to more farmers, experts have been sent to the district's rural areas, giving practical advice on growing vegetables.

After following expert advice, farmers improved their rice quality. The amount of withered seeding in Yuhua Village declined sharply. Last year, the yield was 9,440 kilograms per hectare, a 13-percent increase from the previous year.

Farmers from neighboring villages went there to learn how to grow better rice and the improved farming methods spread. Quality and yields increased in a wider area.

The district has also established seven agricultural research institutes on grapes, hami melon, winter sweet and aquatic animals. The district cooperates in agriculture with 10 universities, including Jiao Tong University, Shanghai Maritime University and Nanjing University of Agriculture.
