Recruiting future leaders in science and technology

JIADING District started the fourth round of recruitment of high-level science and technology leaders. More than 100 such leaders have been hired in three previous recruitments since 2002, focusing on the health care, education and industrial technology fields.

Few people understand the double suction centrifugal pump, not to mention its state-of-the-art technologies. As a matter of fact, industry insiders all know that this knowhow is still a blank at home and abroad. In 2002, senior engineer Xiao Gonghuai from Kaiquan Group was recruited as the leader of research work in this field.

The project started from scratch. Xiao brought his team of five young engineers to visit the research institutes at home and abroad, including a fluid technology company in the US. Two years later, Xiao developed a water-powered model, the first of its kind in the world, and got four patents. Currently the technology has been adopted by an offshore oil drilling platform in the Bohai Sea and several other domestic projects, bringing total sales of 225 million yuan (US$36 million) in its first year. The technology has also been exported to the Czech Republic and Singapore.

At Jiading Central Hospital, minimally invasive surgery to remove urinary stones now has a 95 percent success rate, nearly double the figure in 2004.

Professor Huang Yiran from Renji Hospital was hired as the leader of a project to "prevent and cure urinary stones through minimally invasive surgery" by Jiading District Central Hospital. Soon Huang found the reason for the low rate of successful operations: the diagnosis and treatment process were not reasonable and the hospital lacked advanced equipment. His team spent three years visiting outpatients, getting to know the curative effect in the short and long term, and then set up a standard process to better treat the patients. The hospital also bought advanced machines. More than 500 patients benefited from the program and regained their health.

When doing research work, project leaders shoulder another task: training professionals for the future. Since 2000, Ju Lihua from Jiading Teacher's Further Study Institute has been recruited three times as a leader of math teaching research project. Ju found some young math teachers emphasized teaching math only while neglecting students' psychology and arranged the class poorly. Ju designed a new standard teaching process and showed them how to analyze the psychology of students.
