Recycling systems help firms save money

SEVEN units in Jiading District were recently chosen for piloting recycling projects .
The projects involve electronic waste treatment, extraction of waste water residue and some other energy-saving ones.
In past years, the local government has been encouraging the development of recycling and major gains have been made.
Many companies have bought new equipment or improved workmanship to turn waste into something useful.
At Unisteel Fastening System (Shanghai) Co Ltd in Malu Town, industrial wastewater is used to raise fish.
"Raising fish could be the best way to test water safety," said manger Cao from the company.
Eight fish swim in a 4-square-meter pond which is connected to the factory's main sewerage pipe.
Unisteel mainly produces hard drives for computers and electronic products for automobiles. With an annual water usage of 220,000 tons, the company invested 4 million yuan (US$585,878) last year to optimize waste water recycling equipment and waste water treatment systems at the production workshops. It can save 730,000 yuan in annual water cost.
Shanghai Flat Glass Co Ltd has invested 2.8 million yuan to renovate its production line and install waste heat recovery equipment. It has saved the company 1,512 tons of fuel each year.
