Relax in style at the latest shopping center complex
On a sunny afternoon, drink a cup of coffee in an old-style cafe, see a movie, order a designed garment and have a walk on nearby Zhouqiao Old Street or Qiuxiapu Garden. This is relaxed lifestyle promoted by Jiading Old Town.
Liucheng Xintiandi, which used to be the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics factory, will soon turn into a shopping center with a cinema, shops and restaurants.
With a total floor space of over 200,000 square meters, the institute owned 16 old workshops in different styles. Built in the 1950s, the one to three-story buildings are made of black or red bricks and have slanted roofs. The external appearance of the workshops and the mature trees are all retained. The creepers on the wall of a three-story workshop and the mailboxes of institute employees are also preserved.
Along Tacheng Road, a one-story red-brick workshop has become a Starbucks outlet. The high beams, hanging lamps plus the bare red-brick walls will bring the visitors the feel of changing of time and space.
Drinking coffee here you would feel as if you were in a cafe of a western country, but at the same time admiring an eastern country’s industrial heritage.
A large workshop will become the 10-hall Feilin International Cinema. The biggest hall, with a 19-meter-high screen can hold 200 cinemagoers, while the smallest one can cater for just 20. The small hall can be tailored for a particular film, parties and symposiums.
A red travelling crane, which was used to move goods, will be retained as a decorative fixture.
Liucheng Xintiandi is bidding to be the top shopping center in Jiading’s Old Town in five years. It aims to be a perfect stage for different performances and audiences, and parking lots will be available.
Ten different styles of restaurants will open in a line of old workshops, offering Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Italian food at reasonable prices.
Education training centers and gyms will be in a three-story workshop. Web International English and Gymboree have already opened to the public and coaches in two gyms are providing professional instruction for fitness enthusiasts. Thirty shops will sell arts and crafts, including hand-made designer garments.
There will also be a shop at which consumers can buy online after they try the clothes on. A number of online retailers, such as JD.com and Xindan, have distribution centers and warehouses in Jiading.
Before Liucheng Xintiandi, there was only the Robinson Shopping Center, which was built 10 years ago.
