Renovating a literati's charming garden
TAN Yuan, the private garden of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) writer and artist Li Liufang, will be renovated.
In a bid to develop a four-star tourist attraction in the old street of Nanxiang, the town started to restore the century-old shops, famous residences and historical parks.
Tan Yuan stands to the west of Jinhuang Bridge in Nanxiang, and boasts several scenic spots like the Pao Nunnery, the Dream Gully, the Jiantui Study, the Shenyu Room, the Cizui Pavilion and the Spring Rain Corridor. The garden covers about half a hectare.
Tan Yuan will be reconstructed according to Li's paintings and detailed writings.
The high walls will be built to separate the garden from the buzzing urban life surrounding it, creating an atmosphere of serenity among scenes of wooded hills and waterscapes.
Li Liufang (1575-1629) was born in a politically connected family in Nanxiang. He was famous for his poems and essays, and was a master in calligraphy and seal carving. He didn't sell his works or use them to bribe the upper class, as was so common during that time. Instead, he used his artistic skills merely to record his emotions and observations about the scenery and society of his time.
His indifference to fame and wealth won high praises from men of letters.
Many of his calligraphies and paintings have been preserved, including paintings, personal letters, and calligraphy scrolls. Most of them are kept in museums in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces and in Shanghai.
