Residents benefit from urban renewal

Jiading launched 11 urban renewal projects, including renovating run-down neighborhoods and building sports facilities last year.
Residents in Jiakangfang neighborhood, for example, had endured damp walls, substandard roads and a lack of public green space until a renovation project sponsored by the district government gave their neighborhood an entirely new look. Workers upgraded sewage pipelines and installed an access control system as well as surveillance cameras.
The Jiading government also renovated the homes of 196 families to provide easier access for disabled members.
It offered 812 people with vision or hearing difficulties reading equipment and software as well as a bus which provided services for physically handicapped people 336 times last year.
The government launched three new bus lines last year, helped 247 unemployed people find a job and had 317 more beds added for senior citizens, eight wet markets expanded. Three middle schools, a primary school and three kindergartens were opened.
Jiading also encouraged nearly 210,000 locals to register with a hospital referral system in the past year, launched emergency rescue training courses for 16,000 people and carried out free health examinations for 123,000 senior citizens and free gynecological examinations for 12,375 women.
Sports facilities built last year included four stadiums, 17 footpaths, four gymnasiums and a swimming pool.
