Residents choosing to take the bus

WITH many Jiading residents saying they now prefer to take public transport during rush hour, reporters set out to measure the time taken to reach the same destination by bus or car.

On December 13, a Jiading News reporter set out in drizzle with traffic on the road heavier than usual. He got on a No. 14 bus at 8:08am in Jiading New Town and arrived at the Taxiu Road-Defu Road stop about 15 minutes later, taking about five minutes more than a car when there was no congestion.

However, with congestion at two intersections, namely Yecheng Road-Huyi Highway and Yecheng Road-Bole Road, the bus ride took about the same time.

The same reporter drive a private vehicle from Jiading State Assets Financial Building to the district administrative service center, taking around 15 minutes, just three minutes fewer than the bus.

However, because the No. 14 has to take on crowds at Ruijin Hospital’s North branch, the district judicial center, the district library, Poly Grand Theater and the district administrative service center, the time would be much less outside rush hours.

New-energy comfort

The bus line has replaced all its buses with new-energy vehicles so they will be more comfortable for rides.

Tang Jian, who lives at Ailishe Garden, has to go to Ruijin Hospital’s North branch every week for treatment for a heart condition. He used to become car-sick when smelling diesel fumes.

The new-energy bus has no odor at all so he can just ride the No. 14 bus to see his doctor.

Reporters also made other measurements on the No. 51, No. 3 and No. 5 buses in Jiading and found out that at outside rush hours, private vehicles travel relatively faster, saving 30 percent of the time; but at rush hours the time taken is about the same.

Interviews with residents revealed that many were now taking public transport instead of driving or taking a taxi because their neighborhoods are close to public transport stops.

However, in remote areas of the district where public transport is not available, residents prefer to cars or taxis.
