Residents’ interest in vegetables is growing fast
A VEGETABLE plot at the Fengzhouyifang neighborhood committee building in Jiading New City’s Shigang Community attracts older residents from both inside the community and nearby.
On a second floor platform, dozens of different kinds of vegetables are cultivated.
Residents can plant vegetables in the garden and the committee gives them seeds, soil and pots so they can grow on their own balconies, said Gong Lifang, the committee secretary.
The committee has adopted a vertical planting model to keep the environment clean and tidy.
Twenty five residents joined the program at first, later attracting more householders. Now almost 50 residents plant vegetables there.
“All the green onions, celery and lettuces we eat are planted on my balcony,” said 53-year-old Li Jianmei. She moved to Jiading from Yangpu District last year.
“I hope children in our community can join us to plant vegetables. This activity will benefit them because it will help them acquire agricultural knowledge and enable them to be skilful in planting, thus getting closer to nature, which is really lacking in them as they have lived in a concrete jungle since they were very young,” Gong said.
