Residents proud of 鈥榮unshine project鈥
Self-regulation is making an apartment building a model residential unit in Jading鈥檚 Dingxiu Community.
Located where a textile market, an auto parts market and a vegetable wholesale market meet, the community is overcrowded with residents.
Some rooms have been used as warehouses and workshops and the unstable flow of non-residents brought security and cleaning issues.
Resident Mao Li鈥檃n was the first to volunteer to do something about the situation. After negotiations with the neighborhood committee and other residents, he had a fence erected at the entrance, paying 5,000 yuan (US$757) from his own pocket.
The fence was effective. When it became too much trouble for the tenants to carry goods in and out, they could only move out. Order was gradually restored to the building.
Seeing the result, other residents became motivated to improve their surroundings too. They set up a fund to pay for changes. They hired cleaners at the cost of 1,000 yuan a month and built a rack in front of the building for bicycles.
Residents say they鈥檙e proud of what they are calling their 鈥渟unshine project.鈥
Its success spread throughout the community. Other buildings also started to install surveillance, put up polite reminders and made corresponding improvements.
鈥淏asically the public interests for the buildings can afford the polish,鈥 said the community Party secretary Huang Yu. 鈥淎wards are also available for outstanding projects, so that the improvements would be free.鈥
The neighborhood committee was inspired to designate space in its office where residents can exchange ideas with committee workers or hold multiple community events.
