Residue check to ensure food safety
Vegetables at wet markets in Jiading District are being tested for pesticide residue as part of a government project to ensure food safety.
All 69 wet markets across the district are included in the program.
In the summer heat, pesticides are widely used on vegetables to kill insects. Pesticides can evaporate after a period of time on the surface of the vegetables so long as they are qualified according to national rules.
However, a few growers don’t wait and sell the vegetables with pesticide residue to make money faster.
To solve the problem, wet markets started to check residue levels on site.
Workers at the Yumin Wet Market in Jiading Industrial Zone check the pesticide residue at 6am every day, examining more than 10 types of vegetables at random, with emphasis on greens as worms like the soft and juicy leaves. The whole process of check takes about 23 minutes.
This year the market found 80 kilograms of vegetables with excessive pesticide, which were forced to be removed from sale and destroyed, according to market officials.
At Rongchuang Wet Market in Malu Town, test results are displayed on LCD screens, and local residents will get the information in the market as soon as they enter it.
