Retaining a sense of the past
This is the original Jiading, where traditional snacks, busy streets and the atmosphere of a prosperous new spring can be found. People witness the arrival of each Chinese New Year at Zhouqiao Old Street, Nanxiang Old Street, Anting Old Street, the Confucius Temple, Guyi Garden and Yong'an Pagoda.
Anting Old Street
Anting Old Street is in the northwest of Shanghai International Auto City. It retains the "road - bridge - street" structure of a Jiangnan watertown. This area contains the nine-story Yong'an Pagoda and the ancient Bodhi Temple, which was originally built in the Three Kingdoms era (AD 220-280). There are old, famous stores on both sides of the street.
People can enjoy the night scene of the old street, and buy gingko cake and sliced lamb. Jiading bamboo carving and Xuhang straw weaving articles are also good choice for tourists to buy at Bamboo Carving and Straw Weaving Hall.
Zhouqiao Old Street
This street is the center of Jiading's urban area and was built in 1218 in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). The street is now a pedestrian street. With ancient trees, gardens, pagodas left from the Song (960-1279), Yuan (1271-1368), Ming and Qing dynasties, it may be called "the root of Jiading." The street resembles a Jiangnan watertown featuring one pagoda, two rivers, three streets and four bridges.
Traditional snacks like xiaolongbao (little steamed buns), roasted sweet pears, strong-smelling preserved bean curd and appetizing clover cakes can be found along the cobblestone street.
Confucius Temple
The Confucius Temple is on Nandajie Street in Jiading Town and was built in 1219. The temple was originally named Wenxuanwang Temple and was honored the "No. 1 in Wu Area" for its great scale. The Confucius Temple was the source of Jiading culture. The temple includes a memorial archway, stone-carved lion, Lingxing Gate, Pan Pool, Dacheng Hall, Danghu Academy and more. This museum catches the 1,300-year history of the rise and fall of the Chinese imperial examination system from the Sui Dynasty (AD 581-618) to the late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) when it was abolished. Through February 29, the "New Spring" Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Exhibition will be held at the Xiangxian Ancestral Temple in the temple.
Nanxiang Old Street
Nanxiang ancient town was prosperous in the Southern and Northern Dynasties (AD 420-589) in Jiangnan (regions in the south of the lower reaches of Yangtze River). Nanxiang Old Street is 270 meters long, which was originally named as Siqian Street. The old street is made of cobblestone or brick, and the simple pattern embedded on both sides of the road brings back memories of how it used to be.
A dragon lantern festival will be held at Tanyuan Garden, a new scenic spot on the street. Check in Nanxiang Old Street during the holiday if you are interested in Chinese lantern riddles and folk art.
Guyi Garden
Guyi Garden was first built between 1522 and 1566 in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is the largest of the five classical gardens in Shanghai.
The garden's name is got from the "Shi Jing" ("Book of Odes"), meaning "beautiful green bamboo." The Ming-style garden features flowers, stones, paths, couplets and poems. Tourist attractions include Untied Boat, Tangjingzhuang Pillar, Yiye Hall, Buque Pavilion and South Hall.
The 2012 Guyi Garden Lantern Show will be held from February 3 to 6 in celebration of the Lantern Festival, which falls on February 6. The garden will also be opened to tourists at night during the four-day event.
