Rice straw recycled into organic fertilizer
MORE than 37,000 tons of wheat and rice straw created by the summer and autumn harvests in Jiading District have been recycled into organic fertilizer, at a rate of 90 percent.
"Returning wheat and rice straw to the fields is a main recycling method," said an official from the district's agricultural commission. "The mulched chaff not only improves soil fertility but also helps reduce air pollution because we don't have to burn it off."
The district has spent almost 9 million yuan (US$1.4 million) to buy machines to chop up the straw into fine mulch to spread on the fields. Mixed with manure, wheat straw serves as an excellent organic fertilizer.
The Yonghui Sheep Co and the Yuanjian Organic Fertilizer Co annually turn about 10,000 tons of straw into about 50,000 tons of green fertilizer.
Stalks from other vegetables can also be recycled or be used to produce marsh gas.
