Riverside gas stations planned to fuel ships

JIADING District plans to set up gas stations along rivers to meet an increasing demand from cargo ship owners and to crack down on illegal oil suppliers.
The invitation to tender for the gas station plan, Jiading’s first, has been completed.
There are 18 shipping lanes totaling more than 200 kilometers in Jiading, with 88 kilometers of them trunk shipping lanes for large cargo ships to transport goods. In the past two years the number of cargo ships has exceeded 20,000.
However, there are no qualified gas stations along the rivers. And in Shanghai there are only one waterside gas station and four refueling ships on the Huangpu River. So most of the ships rely on oil tanks to refuel on river banks.
Most of the refueling oil tanks are illegal and the oil provided is poor in both quality and quantity. And the emissions also pollute the environment.
Authorities strengthened crackdown on the illegal oil tanks in recent years.
However, as the refueling tanks are hard to track down, it’s difficult for officials to stop them and punish the offenders.
The maximum fine for illegal oil tanks is 50,000 yuan (US$7,463), according to related regulations.
Apart from diesel, the gas station under plan will also supply liquefied natural gas. “LNG is clean energy promoted by national government for it saves energy and it’s environmentally friendly,” said Wang Bo, deputy director of Jiading Marine Department.
