Running on the road to health
Running has become so popular recently that new types of “fun” events, such as the Rainbow Run and Zombie Run in China, have joined the traditional marathon and half-marathon.
Jiading has a running group for seniors that has been going for 33 years.
The oldest member is 85-year-old Zhu Jiaquan, who started running when he was 20.
In his youth, Zhu was a shop assistant who had to ensure the shop was open before 5am every day so he developed the habit of getting up early.
When he got a job that didn’t entail such an early start he still woke at the same time and took up running to fill in the time.
Every morning he runs 4 kilometers and that schedule hasn’t changed for 65 years.
Zhu is in good health and even problems stemming from a spinal condition have been relieved by his long-time exercise.
Wang Xuelong, who is 65, is tanned and strong and still competes in half marathons. He’s also a gym enthusiast.
He took up the sport because when he was having treatment for a stomach problem he was too poor to pay the fare so he started running instead.
For Zhu and Wang, exercise is their life and their exercises are an essential part of their lives and something that keeps them healthy and happy.
