Rural residents get new house

REDEVELOPMENT work in Jiading New City is in full swing. Large housing tracts are now springing up on what was once rural land, improving housing conditions for local residents.

"Yuanxiangfang" in the centre of Jiading New City is one high-quality redevelopment project to house rural residents.

After two years of construction, the first phase of project will be ready soon for occupancy by the first 600 families. The housing area sports colorful playgrounds for children, spacious underground garages and large sunken central parkland square.

China roses, sweet osmanthus camellias and other flowers abound in the residential area bringing fragrance and color to all seasons. Broad spaces between the buildings ensure plentiful sunshine time for every family.

Each unit comes equipped with an emergency calling system that can alert security guards with the press of a button. Cameras have been installed to ease concerns about burglary.

"Huifengheyuan" on Shuping Road is another redevelopment area for displaced rural residents. Some, like 79-year-old Chen Linzhen, have already moved in.

Chen, who has trouble walking, told reporters she was happy with her new accommodation.

"It's only a five-minute walk to grocery shopping," she said. "In our old homes, we used to carry chairs to sit in front of the door to chat with neighbors. Now we can chat while doing exercises in the rehabilitation activities room at the community service center."

Education, cultural, medical facilities are also part of the housing project.

Jiading plans to build seven neighborhood centers in all the communities in the central area of Jiading New City.

The neighborhood center in "Longhulicheng" has been roofed. The center covers an area of 12,000 square meters, including over 20 facilities such as banks, post offices, supermarkets and senior citizen activity centers. More than 20,000 residents in the area will benefit from the project.

In the process of urbanization in Jiading, a large number non-farm residents are being accommodated in the new projects and helped by government benefits.

Since 2003, when the "town insurance" policy was implemented, the Jiading government has paid lump sums to 77,353 farmers no longer working the land. About 20,809 people are receiving town insurance monthly, while 48,445 people are receiving off-farm pensions.
