Safety first as district invests in tech
SECURITY facilities have been beefed up in Jiading District with 12 high-tech projects put into use this year solving problems concerning public security, social management and food safety.
Digital systems include surveillance cameras, e-fences and infrared warning devices are playing a key role in improving safety in the district.
In Jiangqiao Town's Taiping Village, the local government has invested more than 2 million yuan (US$320,000) in equipping the residential area with 16 intercoms, 20 patrol bicycles and 204 surveillance cameras.
One of the outcomes of the new measures was to help local law-enforcement officials crack down on an illegal waste recycling station.
The Jiading government plans to install 378 surveillance cameras and 11,000 meters of e-fences in 247 residential quarters across the district. The installation was basically completed at the end of October.
School safety
Schools are also benefiting from upgraded security facilities. This year, the local government has spent 7 million yuan in improving intrusion prevention systems in 55 schools. It plans to spend a further 4 million yuan to cover all the schools in the district.
Schools, such as Zhongguang Senior High School, are now making the fullest use of their electronic security devices, such as high-definition surveillance cameras and solar-powered lighting.
Food safety is also on the agenda.
This year, the Jiangqiao wholesale wet market established a supervisory and controlling system to guarantee food safety. Around 2,400 vegetable samples are sent for testing every day at an annual cost of 1 million yuan. A wholesaler surnamed Wang, whose vegetable was found unqualified, had all his vegetable destroyed under the supervision. The Jiading government has also reinforced the supervision of the abandoned or diseased and dead pigs. So far, 92 cases of concern have been investigated.
In hospitals, a "Safe Hospital" project is under way at local facilities. Jiading Central Hospital, for example, has spent 20,000 yuan in the maintenance of various medical devices. Efforts have also been made to ensure that sufficient reserves of emergency medical equipment are available.
