Saving big energy with small actions

THERE are many little things that can be done to save energy.

Enterprises in Jiading District are making conscious efforts to reduce energy use by turning off computer monitors and lights during lunch breaks, using energy-saving light tubes and reducing water consumption. In the long term, these small actions have saved a considerable amount of energy.

At Shanghai Pioneer Speakers Co, all lights and computer screens are turned off on the second floor of the office building during break times. Employees have gotten into the habit of saving energy.

In the past four years, the company has saved more than 156,600 yuan (US$24,857) in electricity costs for lighting and computer screens.

At Philips Yaming Lighting Co, old light tubes have recently been replaced by energy-saving ones. The lights at the company need to be turned on all day long. With the replacement of all the 6,255 old 40-watt tubes by 28-watt ones, the company can save 27,000 watt hours, or 202,000 yuan a year, according to Qiang Junsheng, senior engineer of the company.

"The cost for replacing the light tubes was around 170,000 yuan. That means we can cover the cost in less than one year," Qiang said.

By adopting the newest water-saving equipment, Courtyard Shanghai Jiading hotel reduces the water usage of 1,500 tons each month, saving 43,000 yuan a year.

Besides, they have made various requirements for different departments for water saving. For example, dishwashers and washing machines can only be used at 80 percent capacity.

"The hotel has reduced water consumption 3 percent each year" Gong Qingwen, the hotel's chief operating officer said.

"The hotel has hired a third party to supervise its water use, which will submit a detailed analysis of its water consumption and provide a water saving solution."
