Savings by recycling industrial sewage justify the cost of special equipment

A total of 49 large industrial enterprises in Jiading recently began recycling of industrial sewage, with the total amount of recycled water reaching 1.16 million cubic meters.
A printing company in Xuhang Town can now make industrial sewage drinkable after advanced processing with a modern ultra-filtration and reverse osmosis system. Different from traditional disposal measures, the sewage is not sent to a disposal plant. Instead, it’s delivered into the system, which will purify the water and send it back to the workshop. The recycled water tastes no different to tap water.
“The recycled water is definitely drinkable. It’s just that most people can’t accept that,” said He Jiyue, an official with the company. “Of course, we recycle the sewage for use in production, not for drinking.”
He said the company can save about 300,000 tons of tap water annually with the new system, saving about 1.65 million yuan (US$268,620) on water costs. Taking into consideration the cost of the equipment, the company can recover the cost in three to four years.
However, the 49 enterprises involved in recycling waste water only account for 4.2 percent of such enterprises, still a small group.
“Many enterprises perhaps think the investment on sewage recycling equipment is too much,” He said. “They just don’t realize the fact that it’s a long-term investment, and the return will be much higher than the cost.”
