Savoring the tranquillity of Maoqiao Village
MAOQIAO Village is so tranquil and comfortable that many former residents who had moved to urban areas are now moving back.
Mao Jingjing, a law student, lives at Maoqiao No. 5 Community. She will graduate from Shanghai University this year and is looking for a job.
She remembers that when she was enrolled her whole family expected her to leave their small village and seek a bright future in more developed areas.
But now she wants to return to the village.
The idea of staying at home occurred to her when she worked as a guide at the "Huating Family," a showcase of modern Jiading District agriculture. She was proud that her hometown has became a tourist destination after it was built into a new village.
"I used to feel my horizons were a bit limited because I lived in a rural area and didn't know much about what was happening in urban areas," she says. "So I wanted to work in developed areas to learn more."
However, her hometown has developed into such a beautiful place that she wants to become a public servant in her village.
"I believe I can develop myself by being dedicated to building my hometown into a new ecological tourist destination."
Maoqiao villager Hu Zhenming used to earn 1,000 yuan (US$147) a month at an enterprise.
Today the 59-year-old man owns a restaurant featuring local cuisines. Last year, his net income was more than 50,000 yuan since more and more tourists come to the village and restaurants are popular for their rural flavor.
"Maoqiao Village's environment is among the top in Shanghai," says Mao Jianguo who owns an old house in the village. "I have decided to move back here after retirement."
He plans to renovate the old house and grow fruit and vegetables.
"City dwellers will envy me," he says.
Last year 120,000 visitors came to Maoqiao Village to experience an easygoing rural life.
