School’s latest courses include golf in the afternoon

Jiading Experimental Primary School has changed its curriculum for the new semester. Chinese, math and English are taught in the morning, while afternoons are for activities that include golf, fencing, music and pottery.

“In principle we do not arrange main courses in the afternoon,” said Hua Jie, the school’s headmaster.

Hua pointed out that the aim of the new curriculum is to train children’ adaptability, creativity and improve their quality of life.

Students will spend their afternoon time in dozens of courses in five areas: art, life skills, communication, sports and natural science.

In sports courses, for example, in addition to football and basketball, students will also have baseball, golf, fencing and swimming courses.

In life skill courses, the school has arranged classes in Chinese cuisine and traditional button making.

The school has also set up courses for grade three students to learn programming and design. Headmaster Hua said the school might open courses in finance to raise the students’ ability to adapt to society in the future.

Some parents had wondered if the curriculum changes might affect their children’s normal studies, but Hua said the reform was strictly in accordance with the requirement of the 2015 curriculum plan for middle and primary schools in Shanghai.

In addition, the school invited experts to evaluate the curriculum in order to ensure quality.

For example, in the sports course, the school originally planned to provide eight games for students to choose from. However, that setup is not suitable for primary school students as they tend to change their hobbies frequently, according to experts.

So the school decided to provide opportunity for students to experience the courses in different grades with sports games, and allow them to choose courses freely in the fifth grade.

“Every afternoon the ‘happy activity day’ allows students to learn by playing games,” Hua said.
