Schools ring the changes as new semester begins

Schools in Jiading District are making changes as a new semester started this month for middle and elementary schools.

To raise the quality of classroom education, a number of elementary schools will replace single-standard performance assessment methods with multi-layered ones.

Recently in Chengzhong Road Elementary School, an educational campaign to combine knowledge with entertainment was launched to give students a surprise for the new semester.

The school is introduce a Star Program where students can choose a Star Card containing tasks for the semester. The students will work with parents and teachers to accomplish the tasks.

“I want to lose weight,” third grader Wu Xin said when he picked up a Star of Health card and wrote down his wish for the new semester.

“If you insist on working out, you will certainly be able to lose weight,” a teacher told him.

You Xiaolan, deputy head of the school, said the introduction of the Star Program in addition to standard education is to encourage practical skills and innovation.

“We combine the Star Tasks with normal education practices throughout the year to make education more interesting for students,” You said. “Under the instruction of teachers, students will be more active in learning.”

In the Montessori School of Shanghai, a privately owned kindergarten, the first batch of newcomers were amazed at the bright classrooms, paths covered by bark, and well-design teaching tools.

“Kids are like a piece of sponge. We place water around them, and the process of teaching is to let them know how to absorb water,” said Hu Jie, the school’s executive director. “We started to recruit new students for the first time this semester, and we have two classes with the age of from 18 months to 3 and 3 to 6.

“We feature Montessori education that prioritizes education during sensitive period of age and nurtures the self-study capabilities of the children. We hope to offer a variety of educational options for parents,” Hu added.

Jiading is to promote 70 educational projects including eight kindergartens, two elementary schools and two middle schools. Construction has also started for another five school expansion projects.

A campaign with the theme of “loving Jiading, visiting museums, and feeling the 800 year history of Jiading” started on March 3. More than 30 museums, galleries and art centers are offering free access for middle and elementary students in Jiading.

In the next three months, the students can book visits to the venues according to their own interests.

“It is an innovative interaction between education and culture by encouraging students visiting public and private museums, tasting the Chinese culture, understanding Jiading history, and recording the students true feeling with essays,” said Jin Lixin, deputy party head of the district education bureau. “The rich cultural resources of Jiading can offer solid education materials for schools. Encouraging students to visit museums can help lift moral standards and cultural awareness of students.”
