Schools stronger with quake proofing

JIADING will boast 400 earthquake-proof schools within five years.

Through building new schools and renovating old ones, the district is endeavoring to improve quake-proof facilities.

The project will raise the school buildings' seismic intensity up to 7 magnitudes.

Currently, Jiading has 124 schools with a total of 790 teaching buildings. The number of students reaches almost 70,000 while the number of faculty is over 5,800.

Eighty-four elementary and middle schools have undergone a random inspection on earthquake-proof capacity since last October.

The main renovation targets are 244 old teaching buildings built before 1995. Their current architectural structure and foundations are unlikely to sustain seismic intensity of up to 7 magnitudes and need to be renovated or rebuilt soon.

Feng Ming, head of Equipment Management Center of the Jiading Education Bureau, said most of the schools were old and needed renovation.

"Before 2011, Jiading will complete 69 projects including renovation of the school stadium of Jiading No. 1 High School," Feng said.

"The 69 projects involve 198 school buildings and half will be kicked off next month."
